Assisi
Probably the most popular among Umbrian villages, Assisi is the birthplace of St. Francis, patron Saint of Italy. His powerful prays and rules renovated the Catholic Church in 13th century and recently inspired the newly elected Pope who decided, for the first time in the history of Catholicism, to bear the name of the Umbrian friar who preached poverty.
The highlights of Assisi are doubtlessly the two imposing Basilicas dedicated to St. Francis, decorated with marvelous frescoes from masters such as Cimabue, Giotto and his followers, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and many others. The town offers also many other interesting buildings and venues, as well as shopping opportunities to buy nice handicraft and souvenirs.
